Momentum is also available at the dynamic pinnacle of the A3 family: The S3 is joined by the Audi S3 Sportback. It has the same immensely powerful engine under its hood: The 2.0 TFSI has an output of 195 kW (265 hp); its maximum torque of 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) is constantly available from 2,500 to 5,000 rpm. The turbocharged direct injection engine catapults the Audi S3 Sportback into the exclusive class of compact, fast sports cars.

In comparison with the A3, the two-liter engine in the S3 has been intensively further developed. The turbo, with its upsized turbine and compressor turbine wheel, builds up a relative charge pressure of up to 1.2 bar. A reengineered charge air cooler significantly lowers the temperature of the compressed air and thereby increases the air mass required for combustion.

Pistons with reinforced pins operate within this, the most powerful TFSI engine; reinforced, newly mounted connecting rods transmit the forces onto the crankshaft. The cylinder block has been stiffened, with its head being cast from a new, high-temperature alloy. The exhaust camshaft timing has been adapted to the increased output, whilst the high-pressure injectors have been provided with increased cross-sections. With all of its concentrated technology, the highperformance, turbocharged engine weighs just 152 kg (335.10 lb), less than comparable engines from direct competitors.

The Crown Victoria has remained largely unchanged since 1992. For 2007, Ford dropped the LX Sport trim in favor of the Handling and Performance Package. Remote keyless entry and a CD player are now standard on all Crown Victorias. The venerable 4.6L V8 engine is now flex-fuel capable.

A long-time Ford stalwart whose fans include Police departments and taxi companies across the country, the 2007 Crown Victoria provides a durable platform for roomy and comfortable cruising. For the current incarnation, Ford has kept the important aspects of the vehicle the same: large trunk, plenty of legroom, and Ford's workhorse 224-horsepower 4.6L V8 engine.

The base Crown Victoria has a split front bench seat, with the driver side being power adjustable. Wood grain adorns the instrument panel, which includes an analog gauge cluster with uncommon oil pressure and voltage indicators. Anti-lock brakes are standard equipment as is a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, power windows and locks, cruise control, remote keyless entry and, for 2007, a CD player.

Optional equipment includes traction control, a $175 option, as well as adjustable pedals for $120.

The LX, which starts at $295 more than the standard trim includes nine-spoke alloy wheels and paint stripes. Interior add-ons include an overhead console with compass and air conditioning.

The LX is more configurable than the standard Crown Victoria with an available leather bench seat. The Handling and Performance Package includes rear air suspension as well as revised springs and shocks. The engine is tuned for 15 additional horsepower. Also included are 17-inch aluminum wheels, a body-colored grille, and leather-trimmed front bucket seats and steering wheel.

A six-disc in-dash CD changer is also optional, as are a power moonroof and the Premier Group, which includes power seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an upgraded stereo

Mercedes has unveiled their latest AMG Sports package for the 2009 Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the CL-Class. With revamped AMG bodystyling, attractive 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels and special interior details, both top Mercedes-Benz models can now be made more striking than ever in terms of sportiness. The AMG Sports package is now available for five Mercedes model types.

New AMG Sports package, including a front apron with large air intakes, enhances the visual impact of the S-Class and the CL-Class. The rear apron with a striking black insert and integrated, rectangular tailpipe trim in polished stainless steel is also eye-catching. AMG side sill panels round off the AMG bodystyling. 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with a five-spoke design and wide-base 255/40 (front) and 275/40 (rear) tyres fill the wheel arches perfectly and provide optimum contact with the road. 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels are available as an option in a twin-spoke design with 255/35 and 275/35 tyres. Mounted on the front axle there are perforated brake discs and silver-painted brake callipers featuring Mercedes-Benz lettering; the V6 models have a more generously proportioned braking system.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class AMG Sports Package comes with a wood trim and the wood/leather steering wheel in black ash give the high-quality vehicle interior a dynamic feel. The AMG Sports package also includes velour floor mats with AMG lettering and sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs.

The AMG Sports package is available for all S-Class models with a short or long wheelbase, as well as for the CL 500 and CL 500 4MATIC. It costs between 5831 and 7973 euros (including 19% VAT); the market launch commences in June 2009. In addition to the S-Class and CL-Class, the E-Class Saloon, the E-Class Coupé and the C-Class can be equipped with the AMG Sports package.

Model changes:
The BMW Z4 roadster and coupe are carried over with almost no changes for 2008. The wheels offered as part of the available Sport Package are now 18-inchers, and Stratus Gray Metallic replaces Silver Gray Metallic in the color palette.

Model value:
The 2008 BMW Z4 is a rear-wheel-drive sports car available either as a roadster or as a racy-looking, low-slung coupe. Among roadsters, the Z4 especially stands out for its better power-to-weight ratio than the Mercedes-Benz SLK, and for its more traditional soft-top convertible arrangement. The entire engine range consists of smooth, responsive inline six-cylinder engines.

The 2008 BMW Z4 roadster comes in three models (3.0i, 3.0si, and M), and coupes come in two trims (3.0si and M). Each trim brings different engines underhood. The 3.0i is powered by a 215-horsepower, 3.0L in-line six-cylinder engine, while the 3.0si gets a more powerful, 255-horsepower version of the 3.0L; both have Valvetronic variable valve lift. The top-of-the-range M includes a 330-horsepower, 3.2L six. All three models come with a six-speed manual gearbox, but a six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with steering-wheel shift paddles is optional on the 3.0i and 3.0si.

Roadsters have a fully automatic power folding soft top, with dual-layer material, an aluminum and magnesium frame for light weight, and a heated rear window.

The Z4's proportions, with a long hood and a rearward seating position, allow for an excellent weight distribution and good dynamics for high-performance driving. The 3.0i and 3.0si models have electric power steering, while the M has a hydraulic power steering system. Coupes get a special performance-optimized suspension calibration, and all Z4s come with run-flat tires.

Inside, the Z4's interior is rather tight, as can be expected from a small two-seater, but it is appointed with luxurious upholster and trim. The dash is trimmed in either wood or brushed aluminum; 3.0i models have faux-leather upholstery inside, while the 3.0si gets "High Performance" leather upholstery in one of four color schemes. The 3.0si also adds automatic climate control, and its top, THX-certified audio system has ten speakers, seven-band digital sound processing, and two subwoofers.

M models get a number of high-performance improvements and appearance enhancements, including M Dynamic Driving Control, a system that allows the driver to change the characteristics of throttle response along with other variables. There's also a semi-dry sump lubrication system, computer-controlled variable differential lock, a heavy duty clutch, a performance-oriented version of BMW's dynamic stability control which includes dynamic brake control and cornering brake control, cross-drilled special-compound four-wheel disc brakes, and larger front and rear stabilizer bars. Inside, the M models also get Nappa leather seat trim with firmer side bolsters, automatic climate control, white-on-black gauges, a thicker steering wheel, and brushed aluminum trim.

A Premium Package brings power sport seats with memory, auto-dimming mirrors, and Bluetooth, while a Sport Package includes Dynamic Driving Control (similar to that in the M), a sportier suspension, and larger 18-inch wheels. Standalone options include a headlight cleaning system, extended leather upholstery, a navigation system, M sport seats, and heated seats.

While it is possible to create the GMC acronym from the company name Grabowsky Motor Vehicle Company, the current name of GM’s truck division was not introduced until 1913, 11 years after the company was founded. No, when Max and Morris Grabowsky went into the truck building business in 1902, they named their new company the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company due to their vehicles’ ability to quickly reach 10 mph.

In 1908, General Motors decided it needed a truck division in its portfolio and began buying up Rapid stock. It officially brought Rapid into the GM fold in 1909, along with another truck builder, the Reliance Motor Company. The two truck companies continued to produce trucks separately under the GM banner until GM merged them in 1913 into the General Motors Truck Company. At this point, the company actually became GMC.

Initial offerings form GMC were hulking beasts built for carrying heavy loads; they made a reputation for themselves during World War I. But in 1918, Chevrolet-built light duty truck was introduced, and it was followed by a light duty truck built by Pontiac. Rather than have three different truck companies competing for the same market, GM rebadged the Pontiac-built half-ton pickup as a GMC model. This was GMC’s entry into the light duty truck market. In 1937 GMC introduced a vehicle that many consider to be the first SUV, the Suburban Carryall.

With the outbreak of World War II, GM once again geared up for military duty by producing six-wheeled 2-1/2-ton trucks that were affectionately known as “Jimmys.” The trucks were so successful that GMC brought the name back in 1970 with a new full-size SUV that competed with the Ford Bronco and International Scout. The Jimmy name would be used again on a smaller version of the truck known as the S-15 Jimmy.

GMC still continues to produce a line of full- and mid-size trucks and SUVs. Most carry heavier duty components or higher trim packages than their Chevy counterparts, backing up GMC’s marketing of its trucks as “Professional Grade.”

Because it defines the modern compact sports sedan, the 3 Series is held in near-reverential esteem by automotive enthusiasts. With a well-balanced blend of power, agility, and creature comforts, the 3-Series has been the benchmark of its class for many years. Nevertheless, there were bumps along the way, and some early versions of the series left something to be desired.

The 3 series two-door was introduced to Europe in 1975 in the wake of the oil embargo. Combining fuel-stingy frugality with good performance, it quickly won a following, outselling its 2002 predecessor by nearly 40,000 units. In 1977 it was introduced to the U.S. market. By 1978, sales had reached 320,000.

The only model offered for sale during this period in the U.S. was the 320i. Kin to the 2002 in both styling and mechanicals, the 320i nevertheless offered a number of refinements, including an improved suspension and a longer wheelbase for more stability. While the 2002 handled well, the new 320i displayed a sense of reassuring confidence that was easier for some American drivers to embrace.

The second version of the 3 Series kicked off with the 318i in 1984. Some fans of the brand were disappointed with this version, because while its specs were similar to the car it replaced, its price tag was much higher. The unhappiness was put partly to rest with the introduction of the six-cylinder 325e, but its engine was tuned for fuel-saving, low-rpm operation. As a result, its performance was not what one might expect from a BMW six. A four-door was added to the lineup in 1985 and was greeted with a huge ho-hum by enthusiasts, but it extended the reach of the series to a different kind of customer.

In 1987, enthusiast drivers got the 3 Series car they had been pining for. The 325i, with a six-cylinder engine tuned for performance, burst on the scene with a 168-horsepower punch. But if the 1987 offering made enthusiasts smile, the new M3 for 1988 made them drool. The first of the 3 Series M cars, it sprinted out of the gate with 192 horsepower, a 141-mph top speed, and body panels that gave it a race-worthy look.

In the years since, the 3 series continued to evolve with increased comfort married to excellent handling and the strong and smooth BMW inline six--albeit with ever-growing price tags. Today, the series includes coupes, convertibles, wagons and sedans. The squarish, clipped look of the early versions has evolved, and today’s 3-Series cars are sleek and swoopy. Likewise, horsepower figures have multiplied exponentially, with turbochargers and a V-8 offered in the current generation. The latest M3, for example, features a V-8 generating a massive 414 horsepower, getting it to the end of a quarter mile in just 12.4 seconds while scalding the skidpad.

Interestingly, General Motors’ largest division, Chevrolet, may never have been created had GM founder William Durant not been forced out of GM. After his ouster from GM, Durant was determined to show the world that he was still a force in the industry. He teamed up with race car driver Louis Chevrolet to start the Chevrolet Motor Company of Michigan in 1911. Louis Chevrolet had worked with Durant before, driving Buick race cars when Durant was the head of Buick.

Chevrolet became so successful that by 1916, Durant’s new company had acquired 54.5 percent of General Motors. This meant Durant was once again the head of GM. In 1918, Chevrolet was folded into General Motors; since that time, the Chevrolet line has been GM’s top seller.

A continuous full line of products has helped Chevrolet maintain its sales dominance, ranging from big and comfortable vehicles like the Impala, to performance icons like the Corvette, to the utility of vehicles like the 1937 Suburban--considered by many to be the first SUV.

Another factor Chevrolet’s success has been the performance and reliability of its engines, from the inline six-cylinder introduced in 1929 and nicknamed the “Cast Iron Wonder” to the small block V-8 introduced in 1955. The small block Chevy V-8 is a design so enduring, its basic design elements are still in use today. It enjoys the distinction of having the longest production run of any mass-produced automotive engine.

Notable Chevrolet models include the 1955-57 Bel Air, a car that all but defines automotive styling of the era; the short-lived rear-engine Corvair; the Corvette, America’s most enduring sports car; and the Camaro pony car. The Camaro has such an iconic reputation that it has received more press and blogged anticipation for its return in 2010 than it did before it went on hiatus in 2002.

Chevrolet continues to be a dominant force in the GM stable, and the No. 1 reason why GM was the world’s largest car manufacturer until passed by Toyota in 2008. The success of Chevrolet pickups alone has carried the manufacturer over the years.

Like the rest of GM, Chevrolet is working to redefine itself in the context of an industry and market in transition. The 2008 Chevrolet Malibu was a car that was built to finally give Honda and Toyota a run for their money. With improvements in ride and handling, interior comfort and fit and finish, the Malibu was intended to make Chevrolet competitive once again.

Chevrolet has been working on improving the rest of its lineup as well. With a carbon fiber-laced, supercharged Corvette hitting the market, plans for a new compact in the works, hybridized versions of its most popular SUVs and trucks available; and the soon-to-be-released Chevrolet Volt (a car projected to be capable of traveling 40 miles on a single electric charge), Chevrolet has the product to be a dominant player in the market once again. However, with GM currently losing money and cutting brands, Chevrolet’s future is uncertain.
